The drawings that make up the gothic, exquisite corpse self-portrait, pictured on the right half of this page, were topcoated, then stitched together and varnished. Each hole for needle and thread needed to be pre-pricked by hand.
I found a way to varnish a charcoal or pencil drawing to give it basically the same durability as an acrylic painting.
